Governor Whitmer joined U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Canadian Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra, and Mayor Mike Duggan in Detroit to announce the first Binational Electric Vehicle Corridor between the U.S. and Canada. The new electric vehicle corridor will stretch from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Quebec City, Quebec, tapping into the 75,000+ miles of Alternative Fuel Corridors in the United States.

High-Tech EV Center Attracting High-Skilled Jobs, Future Mobility Investment

The University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center will focus on accelerating research and development, building a highly skilled workforce, and establishing facilities on U-M’s campus to boost research and education. The Center will invest $50 million to support research and development of new, innovative mobility technologies through public and private partnership. Another $20 million will go toward boosting educational offerings to engage more students and improve workforce talent. To achieve that goal, the Center will participate in efforts such as the state’s EV Jobs Academy.

In a new report from CNBC, Michigan is named one of three states poised to “dominate” electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing in the United States by 2030. Michigan, Georgia and Kentucky will be able to manufacture between 97 and 136 gigawatt hours’ worth of EV batteries per year by 2030, thanks to plans currently in place.
