Success Story

YMCA of Greater Flint

With support from the MEDC’s Michigan Community Revitalization Program, the YMCA of Greater Flint provides residents with a space to move their bodies and connect as a community

In April 2025, Downtown Flint celebrated the opening of the LiveWell on Harrison building, a $41 million mixed-use development featuring 50 apartments and the new location for the YMCA of Greater Flint. In addition to creating housing on site, the facility is also home to Hurley Physical Therapy Clinic and the Crim Fitness Foundation, bringing together health services directly in Flint’s downtown.

The LiveWell on Harrison project builds on the City of Flint’s Master Plan, Imagine Flint, and its vision for a health and wellness district. As the site of the relocated YMCA of Greater Flint, the development also marks a new chapter for the local institution, which served the Flint community at its previous location for 63 years.

With support from the Michigan Community Revitalization Program (MCRP) through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the YMCA of Greater Flint is providing programs for residents of all ages to learn, move and connect.

There’s a Place You Can Go

Located at 719 Harrison Street in Downtown Flint, the site of the YMCA of Greater Flint and LiveWell on Harrison development was previously two single-story buildings. With both buildings vacant and declared functionally obsolete, the owners determined it was in the best interest of the community to demolish the buildings in 2019. The owners and the City of Flint agreed to temporarily turn the site into surface parking in anticipation of future development.

In February 2023, the Uptown Reinvestment Corporation and HWD Harrison, Inc. announced plans to construct the five-story, mixed-use development at the same site that would become LiveWell on Harrison. The MEDC supported the project with a $1.5 million MCRP performance-based grant and a $5.5 million MCRP performance-based loan.

Breaking ground in 2023 and opening two years later, the project brings economic activity to the area and serves as a catalyst for additional development in Flint.

Many Ways to Have a Good Time

Since opening in Spring 2025, the YMCA of Greater Flint has provided residents with a full-service, fully accessible facility, featuring amenities such as a competitive lap pool, family splash pad, basketball court, exercise studios, running/walking track, locker rooms, community space and after-school rooms.

“The new Downtown YMCA in Flint is a renewed investment in the people and future of our community. The support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation was instrumental in helping bring our vision to life,” said Shelly Hilton, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Flint. “Because of MEDC’s partnership, the YMCA is able to provide a welcoming space where families can connect, children can grow and community members of all ages can access programs that strengthen health, wellness and belonging in the heart of downtown Flint. This investment not only improves the overall well-being of our community today but also helps ensure the long-term sustainability of the Flint YMCA so we can continue serving generations to come.”
