MEDC Welcomes Additional Funding for Small Business Relief Heading into 2021

Tuesday, December 29, 2020

Economic recovery and relief efforts continue as MEDC prepares to deliver $60 million in additional small business relief in the new year

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bipartisan relief bill today to provide much-needed resources and support for Michigan’s small businesses, families and frontline workers. The legislation includes $55 million to help small businesses impacted by COVID-19; $3.5 million for grants to live music and entertainment venues; and $45 million in direct payments to workers who have been laid off or furloughed as a result of the virus.

In response, Mark Burton, CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, issued the following statement:

“We saw in December and throughout the year an overwhelming need for additional COVID-19 small business relief funds. Ensuring nearly $60 million in additional relief will make it into the hands of businesses across the state is not only welcome news, but desperately needed. The MEDC stands ready to ensure small businesses and their employees across Michigan can access this critical relief quickly, efficiently and with the greatest impact possible in early 2021.”

In total, the MEDC has launched 21 COVID-19 relief and recovery programs that have supported more than 18,500 businesses across all 83 Michigan counties, helping to retain more than 147,000 jobs for Michigan workers.
