The governor’s proposed FY2027 budget recommendations continue measures that invest in the MEDC’s work to ensure all Michiganders can ‘Make It in Michigan’
This week, Governor Whitmer presented her executive recommendation for the FY2027 state budget, which supports the work of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to ensure all Michiganders can ‘Make It in Michigan’ as we continue to invest in our People, revitalize our Places and compete for and win impactful Projects across the state.
“Governor Whitmer’s proposed FY2027 budget continues investing in Team Michigan and our state’s long-term economic success,” said MEDC CEO Quentin L. Messer, Jr. “These proposed investments reinforce a shared commitment to strengthening communities, empowering people and attracting high-impact opportunities statewide. By supporting priorities ranging from infrastructure and advanced manufacturing to small business, innovation, mobility, arts and culture, historic preservation and aerospace and defense, the budget helps position Michigan as a dynamic place to build a career, grow a business and invest in the future, while underscoring the state’s standing as a globally competitive destination. From current residents to future Michiganders, these investments ensure that everyone can make it in Michigan.”
The governor’s proposed FY2027 budget includes:
- $150 million for Strategic Site Readiness in a FY26 supplemental to invest in new public infrastructure that strengthens Michigan’s competitiveness for future development and redevelopment. This investment ensures alignment with our Make It in Michigan economic development strategy and the federal government’s commitment to localizing more advanced manufacturing and industrial research domestically.
- $59.4 million for Business Attraction and Community Revitalization to stimulate job creation and private investment, revitalize and redevelop vital properties, and support small businesses that serve as the backbones of our communities. This includes funding for signature programs including Small Business Support Hubs, Match on Main, Business Development Program Grants and Community Revitalization Program Grants.
- $15.65 million to continue catalyzing growth in Michigan’s entrepreneurship ecosystem.
- $1 million for the Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation to augment efforts aimed at protecting the state’s existing defense assets, infrastructure, and industry, while helping to secure new missions and increased defense spending in the state. This investment is in addition to the $4 million ongoing general fund provided to this program.
- $16 million for Pure Michigan supporting our efforts to market Michigan as a great place to live, work and play keep attracting visitors and new residents alike.
- $10 million for the Arts and Cultural Program to provide grants to arts and cultural institutions that support the economy and contribute to vibrant communities. This is in addition to the $3.7 million ongoing funding provided for the program and an additional $450,000 in federal funds for enhanced support for arts programming across the state.
- $6 million for Special Events and National Convention Attraction to promote Michigan as a destination for special events, including national conventions, conferences, major sporting competitions or other significant events that feature Michigan to a national audience.
