Designation facilitates private investment, improves economic development opportunities

LANSING, Mich. – For its efforts in establishing a solid foundation to attract private investment and further build on municipality assets, the village of Millington has been awarded the Redevelopment Ready Communities (RRC) certification, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced today.

MEDC formally recognizes the village of Millington as a Certified Redevelopment Ready Community in Michigan. Millington joins an elite group of 55 other Michigan communities that have qualified as “thoroughly prepared” when it comes to planning and zoning to remove traditional barriers and promote opportunities for prospective investors. Millington is the first community in Tuscola County to become RRC-certified and the second smallest in the state.

“Our mission at MEDC is to support Michigan’s strong economic momentum and empower communities to establish a strong planning, zoning and economic development foundation,” said MEDC Senior Vice President Michele Wildman. “The village of Millington is well-positioned to continue to implement their vision for the future and further improve the quality of life for its residents. We look forward to building upon our relationship with the village and supporting local economic development efforts.”

As an RRC participant, the village of Millington received a comprehensive assessment that measured current community and economic development practices compared to RRC best practice standards. The program evaluates and certifies communities that integrate transparency, predictability, and efficiency into economic development practices. Certification status is a compelling indicator that a community has removed development barriers and streamlined processes to be more competitive and attractive to investors.

“Millington became aware of RRC through our relationship with the Tuscola County EDC and we’ve successfully made it to this point due to the many hours of hard work by the Planning Commission and an excellent job by Village Clerk Kaylene Long,” said Village President Gailan Reinert. “The Redevelopment Ready Community certification allows us the opportunity to explore resources to make improvements to our village and keep us growing. Millington will continue to work with the county EDC and we, as village council, are pleased to celebrate this achievement with our community.”

“The process of becoming RRC-certified has helped the village streamline our protocols, applications, and internal processes,” Long said. “The RRC process encouraged a transparent, user-friendly website for our residents and businesses. It has brought together the boards who are now working together towards the same goals to bring businesses into the Village of Millington and to help them prosper. Becoming RRC certified will open doors to future developments, economic growth that will help our small community thrive. We would like to thank the MEDC and the RRC Team for all their support, encouragement, and knowledge. We will continue to follow the RRC best practices, and we look forward to growing our community.”
