Appointment of MEDC key leadership positions

LANSING -- Michigan Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Michael A. Finney today announced the promotion of Vice President and General Counsel Jennifer Nelson to Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel and named Joseph Serwach the organization’s new Managing Director of Communications, both effective immediately.

“These talented and highly experienced professionals will be invaluable adjuncts to our efforts to write the next chapter in our state’s success story and make that story widely known,” said Finney.

In addition to running the agency’s legal unit and supervising outside counsel on MEDC legal matters, Nelson has oversight in the areas of Contract and Grants Administration, Compliance, Internal Audit and Board Relations. In addition, she is Secretary to the MEDC Executive Committee. She is a graduate of Northern Michigan University and Michigan State University College of Law and previously served as an attorney with the Dykema Gossett law firm. Professional memberships include State Bar of Michigan, Ingham County Bar Association and Institute of Continuing Legal Education.

Serwach, a 17-year veteran reporter for several news outlets including Crain’s Detroit Business and the Harrisburg, Pa. Patriot-News, has been charged with establishing an MEDC news bureau to publicize the agency’s activities in coordination with Governor Rick Snyder’s administration and developing digital marketing, Web and social media strategies. Since 2006, he has handled media relations and communications for the University Research Corridor, an alliance of the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University. Before joining MEDC in January, he began an eight-year career at U-M in 2002, most recently serving as state media relations specialist. Serwach has a bachelor’s in journalism and history from MSU and is currently completing an M.A. in U-M’s Higher Education Administration program.
