$260,000 grant to the village of Caro in Tuscola County
LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced a $260,000 grant to the village of Caro in Tuscola County to support downtown public infrastructure improvements. The grant is being made available by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) with funds provided by the federal Community Development Block Grant program. An MEDC official presented a ceremonial check to Caro and Tuscola County officials today.
“Vibrant communities with thriving downtowns are critical to building a strong and diversified economy in Michigan,” Granholm said. “These kinds of projects help put into place the kind of 21st-century infrastructure that can support new business investment and new job growth.”
The Village of Caro is contributing $195,000 to the project, which will consist of the reconstruction of three downtown public parking lots including a new storm sewer, sidewalks, lighting curbs and landscaping.
“Major renovation of these parking lots will enhance the vibrancy of our community and encourage further business expansion and improve the public access to our downtown,” said Tom Striffler, Caro Village president.
The MEDC is able to award approximately $40 million in federal CDBG funds each year. There are 1,655 local governments within the state eligible to apply for these funds. Projects are approved contingent upon compliance with state and federal requirements.
“The CDBG program is an excellent resource that assists communities in facilitating new business development and job growth,” MEDC President and CEO Greg Main said. “The MEDC is pleased to partner with Caro and Tuscola County officials to take this step in strengthening Caro’s downtown.”
