Open Call: Michigan Mobility Innovation Funding Opportunity

The Michigan Mobility Innovation Grant supports the development and deployment of cutting-edge mobility technologies that advance transportation solutions and create positive impact across Michigan communities. Funding is limited and will be awarded on a rolling basis until all funds are committed.

This open call is designed to accelerate innovation by supporting pilots, demonstrations, and early commercial deployments of emerging mobility technologies in real-world Michigan settings. This funding is not intended for straight procurement transactions. 

Key Details

  • Application Deadline: Rolling basis — funding will be deployed until fully allocated.
  • Applicant Notification: Applicants will be notified of funding decisions within 30 days of submission.
  • Funding Availability: Limited — awards will vary based on project scope, matching funds, and impact potential.
  • Project Location: All deployments must occur within the State of Michigan.

 

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Mobility technology startups,
  • Tech providers, or
  • Similar commercial entities working on innovative transportation, infrastructure, or mobility solutions.

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be a Michigan-based company, or
  • Have a Michigan-based partner involved in the deployment.

Ineligible lead applicants include:

  • Entrepreneurial support organizations (e.g., incubators, accelerators)
  • Municipal or county governments
  • Universities or academic institutions
  • Nonprofit economic development organizations

These entities may participate as partners, but not as lead applicants.

 

Matching Funds Requirement

Projects must include matching funds (cost share) to demonstrate shared investment and commitment.

  • Matching funds can be cash or in-kind contributions from partners or collaborators.
  • In-kind support (e.g., staff time, equipment, facilities) is eligible if clearly documented and justified in the budget narrative.

 

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on:

  • Alignment with the MI Future Mobility Plan 2.0
  • Project team and partners
  • Novelty and innovation of the proposed technology
  • Company growth potential and scalability
  • Level of matching funds and partner commitment
  • Technology and business model
  • Number of Michigan-based employees or project participants
  • Ability to deploy (feasibility of project, timeline, budget, etc.)
  • Positive economic, social, or environmental impact on Michigan communities
  • Meet the Needs of Michigan Residents
