Erin Strang, president and CEO of Central Michigan University Research Corporation (CMURC), a nonprofit focused on advancing economic development in the mid-Michigan community, takes us “In the Zone” for an inside look at the Mt. Pleasant SmartZone.

CMURC offers a support system for startups and entrepreneurs, providing hands-on expertise from seasoned industry professionals. Additionally, the SmartZone offers co-working spaces — from offices to a wet lab to product launch space — making it the perfect place for startups to incubate and accelerate their business through collaboration and innovation. CMURC also helps startups grow into their own space through the SmartZone land development, which is 300 acres on the south end of Central Michigan’s campus dedicated to mixed-use research.

Located next to Central Michigan University, the Mt. Pleasant SmartZone offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to capture not only the energy of the young students, but also the intellectual talent of the university.

Receiving funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), SmartZones like CMURC assist tenants in fast-tracking their business concepts from ideation to commercialization by providing them the resources they need to grow.
