Amazon plans to build a new one-million-square-foot state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Shelby Township.

The Michigan Strategic Fund board today announced a $4.5 million performance-based grant for Amazon’s capital investment of a third fulfillment center in the state in less than one year. Amazon plans to build a new one-million-square-foot state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Shelby Township. Amazon will invest $40 million and create more than 1,000 full-time jobs.

“We are thrilled to be working with Amazon on their third project here in Michigan,” said Jeff Mason, CEO, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, which is the state’s chief marketing and business attraction arm. MEDC administers programs and performs due diligence on behalf of the MSF. “This project highlights Michigan’s strategic location, within 500 miles of almost half of the U.S. and Canadian markets.”

Michigan was selected over competing sites in other Midwestern states and Canada.

Today’s announcement comes just three months after Amazon was awarded a $5 million MBDP grant for the creation of a fulfillment center in the city of Romulus, a project that is on track to generate total investment of $140 million and create 1,600 jobs. In addition, Amazon was awarded a $7.5 million MBDP grant in December 2016 for the creation of 1,000 jobs at a new, $90 million fulfillment center in Livonia.

Amazon’s private investment for the three fulfillment center totals $270 million, and includes the creation of 3,625 full-time jobs. Additional part-time jobs will be added for seasonal employment, particularly around the holidays.

“This investment is a true example of partnership driven economic development,” said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel. "As a result, a formerly idled property will be transformed into a one-million-square-foot fulfillment center. We are proud Amazon has made its home in Macomb.”

Shelby Township, which is located in Macomb County, will provide a property tax abatement in support of the project.

Currently, Amazon has about 70 centers nationwide.
