Michigan's EV Ecosystem
Michigan is building the future of mobility across land, sea and air. With manufacturing at the highest engineering standards, leading battery production, real-world testing environments and deep technical talent, we're already advancing electrified and autonomous vehicles, vessels and aircraft. From factory floors and public roads to the Great Lakes and open airspace, companies have what they need to move new transportation technologies forward.Michigan Means Mobility
Michigan is proud to be the home for mobility, electrification and the future of the automotive frontier as it continues to attract a host of battery and electrification investments from companies around the globe, ensuring the future will be developed, tested and deployed here in the state.
Wireless Charging
Michigan currently offers 569 public DC fast-charging stations, 6th in the nation, and over 1,700 Level 2 charging stations throughout the state. Michigan continues to build out this infrastructure to encourage further EV adoption, putting the state within the top 25% of states for electric vehicle registrations.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is now actively working to deploy 83 National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) charging stations and preparing to invest the remaining $51 million in federal NEVI funding throughout Michigan. In addition, Michigan's two largest utilities, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, have joined other utilities to create an interstate EV charging network across the Midwest.
In Detroit, the nation’s first wireless charging infrastructure opened on a public road at Michigan Central. Developed by Electreon, the Inductive Vehicle Charging Pilot allows electric buses, shuttles and vehicles to charge while driving, enabling EVs to operate continuously without stopping to charge. A year later, the technology was expanded to support electric commercial delivery vehicles and stationary wireless charging at a UPS facility.

Office of Future Mobility and Electrification
The Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME) builds on Michigan’s robust mobility legacy and leadership to develop people-centric and community-oriented solutions. Through public and private partnerships, OFME works to enhance Michigan’s mobility ecosystem, enriching lives and creating equitable opportunities, while connecting Michiganders to a brighter future.
Mobility and Electrification Assets
Michigan maintains the world’s most diverse collection of AV testing environments for both early and later stage technologies. Explore the map to learn more about each asset.
Public Policies for Advanced Driving Systems
Michigan was the first state to implement all items on the list below.
- Allowing testing of autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies.
- Allowing AV operations on public roads.
- Allowing AV operations without a human in the vehicle.
- Allowing AV vehicle platooning.
- Allowing on-demand AV operations
- Requiring of liability protections for AV users.
