Mandy and Michelle Walters have been designers and sewers for years—growing up participating in 4-H, a youth development organization where children learn hands-on life skills such as sewing, cooking, crafting and more. Today, they have put these skills to good use through their startup, Lumi, a handcrafted, earth-friendly line of women’s clothing made in their Marquette, Michigan, studio.

Lumi offers multi-seasonal apparel made from high-quality materials designed for longevity. Ethics and sustainability are important to the sisters, and they aim for the company to represent the Upper Peninsula in the way nautical lifestyle brands represent Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Lumi is part of MEDC’s Entrepreneurs in Elevators video series that follows serial entrepreneur and innovator David Ollila as he connects with some of the most passionate entrepreneurs and innovative companies across Michigan. Follow along with the series to hear their stories of trials and triumphs and learn about the ecosystem in the state that allowed them to bring their ideas to life. Contact the MEDC Entrepreneurship & Innovation team to learn more about entrepreneurial opportunities in Michigan and to gain access to valuable business resources.
