More Than $28 Million in Awards Granted and About 47,000 Workers To Be Trained

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced today that an additional 2,293 Michigan workers will have the opportunity to improve their job skills through $538,629 in grants.Eight grants, funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Economic Development Job Training program, will be used to upgrade the skills of workers at eight Michigan companies.

“Michigan possesses a strong workforce.This training will help ensure that Michigan employers have the highly skilled workers they need to compete in the global economy,” said Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.“Additional training will provide Michigan workers with the learning tools and resources needed to improve their job skills and potentially advance in their current positions.”

The program helps Michigan businesses create new jobs or retain existing jobs by improving the skills and competitiveness of Michigan’s workforce.Under the requirements of the job training program, employers must provide a 25 percent match for training existing workers.For these eight grants, employers will provide $210,608 in matching funds.

The funds are provided to local community colleges, vocational-technical schools or other training providers.As the state’s 18 Michigan Technical Education CentersSM (M-TECs)open for business, more companies are expected to utilize their training services, which are tailored to each company’s skill needs and time demands.There are nine M-TECsSM currently open with more scheduled to open this year.

The MEDC has awarded more than $28 million in EDJT grants this year, providing training to an estimated 47,000 Michigan workers.
