Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations win grants from MCACA

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs today approved $5,675,400 in the form of 312 grants to outstanding nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, educational institutions and municipalities in 47 counties to support their effort

LANSING – The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) today approved $5,675,400 in the form of 312 grants to outstanding nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, educational institutions and municipalities in 47 counties to support their efforts to produce high quality arts programming. MCACA received 401 applications requesting $8.9 million in support. 

The FY 2013 grants were awarded through the Program for Operational and Projects Support, the Capital Improvement Program, the Regional Regranting program (previously awarded) and the Services to the Field program (previously awarded). Click here for the Grant List by County; click here for the Grant List by Program. 

“Once again we are grateful for the support this sector has received from Gov. Rick Snyder and the legislature and for their confidence in MCACA,” said MCACA Chairman Drew Buchholz. “Their confidence in MCACA allows us to directly support organizations whose work does so much to enhance Michigan’s image, improve education, stimulate cultural tourism, and strengthen communities statewide by impacting local economies and creating a better quality of life. This is truly an amazing sector.” 

The FY 2013 funded applications represent 10,718 full time employees and an additional 54,868 contracted Michigan artists. They also indicate that an estimated 50 million individuals will attend their programs or exhibits and of that number some 9.8 million are youth. 

“The best our state has to offer is reflected in these grants. This industry provides an invaluable service to our communities, from Houghton-Hancock to Coldwater, from Holland to Port Huron,” said MCACA Executive Director John Bracey. “Beyond mere economy, these organizations give voice to the unspeakable. They really don’t recognize borders and crossing barriers is in their DNA. They welcome everyone to participate in their passion and give us something we can all do together. I am proud to be the director of MCACA and I’m proud of the work the field as a whole is doing for us all through MCACA funding.”
