$81,340 grant to Marine City in St. Clair County

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced an $81,340 grant to Marine City in St. Clair County to support downtown public infrastructure improvements. The grant is being made available by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) with funds provided by the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. An MEDC official presented a ceremonial check to Marine City officials today

“Helping our cities create vibrant downtown areas is an important part of building a strong and diversified economy in Michigan,” Granholm said. “Infrastructure projects like this one in Marine City attract new business investment and bring new jobs to our cities.”

Marine City is contributing $135,090 to the project, which will include improving the facades of four downtown buildings located in the core downtown district, replacing windows and doors, removing and replacing old exterior siding, repainting exteriors, installing new exterior lighting and repairing damaged bricks and mortar.

"I am excited about this project for Marine City and its property owners,” said John Gabor, city manager. “It has taken a long time to develop the grant, but the end result will be the standard for Marine City’s future. I consider this phase one and anticipate our downtown property owners will join this rebuilding effort in future grant applications.”

The MEDC is able to award approximately $40 million in federal CDBG funds each year. There are 1,655 local governments in Michigan eligible to apply for these funds. Projects are approved contingent upon compliance with state and federal requirements.

“The CDBG program is an excellent resource that helps communities promote new business development and job creation,” MEDC President and CEO Greg Main said. “The MEDC is pleased to work with city officials toward strengthening Marine City’s downtown.”
