Defense success stories

Dave Goudreau, Northern Wings Repair logistics and supply chain company, UP Michigan
NORTHERN WINGS REPAIR

Defense is on the rise in the Upper Peninsula. From its simple beginnings in a pole barn 12 years ago, Northern Wings Repair, Inc. has excelled in aerospace and military manufacturing. This Native American, veteran-owned company developed its customer base through Michigan’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) and is now an AS9100-certified aerospace manufacturer and stocking distributor for commercial and military aircraft. As for the next 12 years, it’s safe to say the sky’s the limit in Pure Michigan.

Terry Grimm, Niowave laser technology and missile defense company, Lansing, Michigan
NIOWAVE

Laser technology is moving fast in Michigan. Looking to create the "Holy Grail" of lasers, the U.S. Navy turned to Lansing-based Niowave, Inc. to help develop their next generation of weaponry. Aided by a tax incentive package that allowed them to expand their facility and add more employees, Niowave is perfectly positioned to develop a free electron laser that's powerful enough to knock missiles out of the sky from miles away. It's just another example of how reaching new heights in high tech is Pure Michigan.

Nate Lowery and Russ Ristau, TM3 energy distribution company, Royal Oak, Michigan
TM3 SYSTEMS

Deploying what you want, where you want it. In this technologically-advanced age, the military is looking to do this and more. That’s why they’re turning to companies like TM3 Systems, the premier developer of mobile microgrid power management systems. Following investments from the Michigan Pre-Seed Capital Fund, TM3 is creating solutions that reduce fossil fuel consumption while increasing remote quality and reliability. Giving the military a source of power that’s Pure Michigan.

Why Michigan for defense

Michigan has the infrastructure and the talent to make us a leader in defense. We’re home to the nation’s largest ground vehicle defense companies and TARDEC, the nation’s top research facility for the development of ground vehicle technology, robotics and mobility. We also have a higher concentration of engineers and industrial designers than any other state in the nation.

Michigan’s business climate is one of the most favorable in the Midwest. We eliminated personal property tax, which significantly reduces costs for companies that have expensive capital investments in equipment. And we’re consistently ranked among the top 10 states for major new and expanding facilities. In fact, about two thirds of all Michigan businesses would recommend our state as a place to start a business.

Michigan’s attractive business climate is surpassed only by its natural beauty and active lifestyle. With four seasons, 11,000 lakes and the country’s longest freshwater coastline, Michigan offers ample opportunities to enjoy recreational activities like boating, fishing, golf, skiing, hiking and more. Michigan is also home to the highly regarded Detroit Institute of Arts, over 100 wineries, a growing dining and craft beer scene and four major league sports teams. We also have the lowest cost of living of any state in the Midwest. When it comes to living and doing business, nothing compares to Pure Michigan.
