LANSING – With Michigan rising to the occasion to prove itself as the true Mitten State, Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is encouraging people to put their Michigan pride toward a good cause by donating new or gently used mittens to local charities around the state.

“The outpouring of enthusiasm and support from Michiganders for our state over the past week has been tremendous,” said George Zimmermann, vice president of Travel Michigan. “What better way for the Mitten State to harness this state pride than by providing those in need with mittens to stay warm this winter? As part of this effort we are joining with Travel Wisconsin to encourage folks to ‘shake hands’ and unite together for this great cause.”

Individuals and Michigan businesses donating mittens are encouraged to share their experience on the Pure Michigan Facebook page or Pure Michigan Connect blog.

“During this season the mitten is emblematic of the many terrific opportunities for winter fun people can find here in Michigan,” Zimmermann said. “This mitten collection campaign is a perfect way to give back to Michigan, even as we continue our work to raise Michigan’s profile as the wonderful winter destination that it is.”

Pure Michigan kicked off its winter ad campaign with billboards going up in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin this month and television and radio ads to follow beginning January 2, 2012.

The Michigan Snowsports Industries Association radio ad Ski the Hills of Michigan will air in Fort Wayne, Ind., Toledo, Ohio and Green Bay, Wisconsin as well as the in-state markets of Grand Rapids and Lansing. The Pure Michigan television ads Snow Days and Chance of Snow and the radio ads Snow Day and Snow will also air in these regional markets, as well as in Chicago, Ill., Indianapolis and South Bend, Ind. Cincinnati, Ohio and Milwaukee, Wis.

The Pure Michigan billboards – which highlight snowmobiling, snowboarding and ice climbing – are also being featured in these regional markets, as well as in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, Lansing and Traverse City.
