Expansion Management Magazine Selects Michigan as Number Three on Top 15 List

A recent issue of Expansion Management magazine ranked Michigan among the best states in work force training programs.  With innovative programs like 18 Michigan Technical Education CentersSM (M-TECs) and Economic Development Job Training (EDJT) grants and training more than 47,000 workers in 2000 alone, the state continually ranked high among the consultants surveyed.

The magazine’s third annual ranking surveyed over 50 consultants for their choice of the top work force training programs for a typical medium sized manufacturing company.  The criteria for the selection included flexibility in use, lessened bureaucracy, minimal cost to the employer and customization to fit a particular company’s needs.

“Michigan’s work force training program is tailored to meet the specific needs of each company,” said Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.  “We have invested $60 million in 18 M-TECs designed to provide tailored training to each company’s needs and time demands.  We also assist hundreds of companies and thousands of workers each year through job training grants.”

Michigan was recognized for extensive changes to its work force development program, including the use of community colleges and reduction of paperwork required in the training process.  The current EDJT application involves a three-step process that companies can complete online.

“States that appear on this list caught the attention of consultants and the companies they represent,” said Lance Yoder, managing editor of Expansion Management magazine.  “The states that react to the needs of companies are the ones that generally rate high in the survey.”
