Donald E. Jakeway Also Selected to Serve on Organization's Board

Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) President and CEO Donald E. Jakeway has been selected for the International Economic Development Council's (IEDC) coveted Leadership Award for Public Service, the MEDC announced today. The honor recognizes one elected official or public sector administrator each year who has served as a committed advocate for economic development for at least 10 years. In addition to the award, Jakeway was also recently selected to serve on the board of the directors of the 4,000-member organization.

"This is probably the greatest honor I could ever receive as an economic development professional," Jakeway said. "I am deeply grateful for the members of the IEDC for recognizing my passion for this business and for the results I have been blessed to see over the years."

Nominees for the award must have demonstrated sustained and effective efforts to mobilize community and industry leaders in the development of programs and projects, played a key role in the planning and design of new economic development activities, and displayed dedication and commitment as an economic development leader.

Jakeway will officially accept the award at a ceremony in Arizona in January.

Jakeway has been president and CEO of the MEDC for just over one year. His previous experience includes serving as president and CEO of the Regional Growth Partnership of Northwest Ohio from 1997 to 2003, and director of the Ohio Department of Development from 1991 to 1997 under Governor George V. Voinovich. From 1994-1996, Site Selection magazine ranked Ohio No. 1 in the nation in attracting new business facilities and expansions, and the Ohio Department of Development was recognized as one of the top 10 agencies in the world in 1995 and 1996. Jakeway also has held economic development director positions with the cities of Sarasota, Florida, and Lakewood and Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Jakeway is also a board member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Golf Classic, a member of the British-American Chamber of Commerce, and is involved in numerous other economic development related activities.

The IEDC is the world's largest association of economic development professionals. Its mission is to provide leadership and excellence in economic development with the goal of building economically strong, sustainable communities.

"It is truly an honor to have the opportunity to serve such a highly respected organization," Jakeway said. "In my new role on the IEDC board, I look forward to developing closer relationships with economic developers in neighboring states. I believe strongly that regional cooperation will be a key to taking advantage of some of the 21st century's most promising opportunities."

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, a partnership between the State and local communities, promotes smart economic growth by developing strategies and providing services to create and retain good jobs and a high quality of life.
