Michigan Economic Development Corporation Honors Area Organization Michigan Economic Development Corporation officials commended Houghton’s Somero Enterprises for their successful commercialization of technology developed at Michigan Technological University at the Michigan Investment and Commercialization Success Celebration.At the ceremony, awards were distributed in four areas of commercialization success: venture capital, advanced manufacturing, life sciences and information technology.Twenty-nine organizations from throughout the state were honored.“Somero Enterprises exemplifies the benefits of transferring technology developed at our universities to successful commercialization efforts,” said Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.“Commercialization success is key to helping the state develop into a national leader in the technology-driven economy.”Somero Enterprises was recognized in the advanced manufacturing category.This company is a manufacturer of advanced capital equipment for the concrete industry.Nominated by Michigan Technological University, Somero’s revenues are estimated at $50 million for 2000.Headquartered in New Hampshire, the company has 65 percent of their employees in the Houghton/Hancock area. “This award proves Somero Enterprises’ commercialization leadership.We hope their success will help to encourage further partnerships between Michigan universities and businesses,” Rothwell said.
