Governor Signs Bill Extending MEGA

Tuesday, July 06, 1999

John Truscott
(517) 335-6397

63 MEGA projects have resulted in 74,000 new jobs Governor John Engler today signed a bill extending the life of the Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) by four years. The current MEGA legislation expires Dec. 31, 1999. "MEGA has resulted in an astounding 74,000 new, high-paying jobs in Michigan - jobs that would have gone to other states," said Governor Engler. "MEGA has proven itself over and over again. For two years running, Michigan has been number one among the states in attracting new business. And Michigan from 1991 to 1997 was number one in job creation among the largest states. Extending this legislation will result in even more companies coming to Michigan or expanding their current businesses." Senate Bill 573, sponsored by State Senator Mike Rogers (R - Brighton), amends the Single Business Tax Act to extend for four years the ability of the MEGA Board to award SBT credits as a means of promoting expansion for Michigan firms and attracting new ones. This bill extends the MEGA deadline until Dec. 31, 2003. Since 1995, 63 MEGA projects have been approved, resulting in 19,000 direct jobs and 55,000 spin-off jobs. The MEGA Board has granted approximately $445 million in credits. The average wage for new jobs was $619 per week, and the total private investment is estimated at $2.4 billion. Of the 63 projects, 51 were manufacturing facilities and 12 were non-manufacturing facilities, such as wholesale distribution, research and development, engineering and computer support. "Programs like MEGA make my job much easier, resulting in people getting good jobs," said Doug Rothwell, President and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. "One of the reasons Michigan has thrived in recent years is this program, and I'm thrilled we'll still be able to use it." "MEGA credits mean even more good-paying jobs in Michigan," added Sen. Rogers. "That's why I made it a top priority to get this bill to the Governor by summer. With Governor Engler's signature today, the final piece of the incentive package to bring a new General Motors's assembly plant to Lansing falls into place. My bill and Governor Engler's signature ensures Lansing's continued prosperity for years to come."
