Governor John Engler announced the appointment of Douglas Stites as Acting Director of the Michigan Department of Career Development (MDCD) today. The appointment is effective April 5. Engler announced creation of MDCD in his State of the State Address in January. The new agency will focus solely on workforce issues, a major component of Michigan's economic development strategy. "Doug has been a valuable member of this administration since 1991 and a tremendous force for Michigan's workers," Engler said. "His leadership will help this new department succeed from the start." Stites has been the chief operating officer of the Michigan Jobs Commission since March 1993. He also served the administration as the executive assistant for the Governor's Office for Job Training from 1991 to 1993. Prior to that, Stites spent 15 years in the employment and training field, including nearly 10 years as executive director for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Employment and Training Consortium, a Michigan Works! agency. Stites earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Central Michigan University 1976. He and his wife, Leanne, reside in Charlotte.
