Governor John Engler has declared June Michigan Works! Month, opening the summer hiring season and introducing new Michigan Works! service centers throughout the state. "The centers have been serving the needs of employers and job seekers for several months, and the work is going so well that we want to invite everyone to come and see how Michigan Works can help them," the Governor said. Throughout the month, and into July, the service centers will be holding open houses and grand opening festivities. They will be showing off the new Internet-based job search system that has become the largest such system in the country. Michigan Jobs Commission and Michigan Works! staffs will be on hand, along with representatives from the business community, education, Workforce Development Boards, and local government officials. Doug Rothwell, CEO and Department Director of the Michigan Jobs Commission, said people who have used the new worker-employer matching system have been enthusiastic about how efficient and convenient it is. "The reports we are getting from all over the state indicate a wide acceptance of the system and a willingness to jump into the 21st century with respect to employment issues," Rothwell said. "Those who have needed help have found it readily. In fact, we have heard time and again, that the new process is giving people more leads than they ever expected." "We hope people will take advantage of the open house atmosphere and visit their local centers," the Governor said. "Many of them will be serving coffee and cookies throughout the month and demonstrating the new computer resume and job order system for everyone who is interested."
