Company to Invest an Additional $2.9 Million, Create 40 More Jobs
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that Lear Corporation will create an additional 40 jobs and invest an additional $2.9 million as the result of continued expansion in the village of Mendon in St. Joseph County. In May 2005, the governor announced that the original project would create 51 new jobs and $5.3 million in private investment. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation today offered the company a second Community Development Block Grant totaling $810,000 to support additional expansion.
The funding is being made available by the MEDC with funds provided by the federal Community Development Block Grant program. The award will be used to construct a new well and make other improvements to the water supply needed for Lear to accommodate the manufacture of a new product line. The city will contribute a total of $337,000 to the project.
Community Development Block Grant
The MEDC is able to award approximately $40 million in federal CDBG funds each year. There are 1,655 local governments within the state eligible to apply for these funds. Projects are approved contingent upon compliance with state and federal requirements.
