Several Areas Register Major Worker Recalls Several other major labor markets recorded significant declines in their unemployment rates due to the recall of workers in manufacturing. The Lansing MSA experienced a 3.8 percentage point decrease in its unemployment rate, the second largest reduction. The Saginaw-Bay-Midland MSA recorded a 2.7 percentage point drop, while the unemployment rate in the Detroit MSA declined by 1.5 percentage points. The Ann Arbor MSA recorded a 1.3 percentage point decrease to give it the lowest unemployment rate-1.9 percent-of the 10 major labor markets. The Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland MSA showed a 0.7 percentage point decrease, as did the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek MSA. "Overall, Michigan's unemployment rate has rebounded following the settlement of the GM strike and that's good news for businesses, workers and their families," Rothwell said. Labor Force Levels Rise Labor force levels in August were up in seven labor market areas. They declined in the Ann Arbor and Flint MSAs and the UP. Manufacturing Recalls Boost Industry Jobs According to the monthly survey of employers, total jobs increased by 87,000, or 2.0 percent, in August in Michigan. Of those, 83,000 were in manufacturing. "Most of the growth in manufacturing was the result of increased employment in primary and fabricated metal products and motor vehicle production," Rothwell said. In the service producing sector, jobs increased in retail trade (+5,000) and services (+13,000). Employment gains in services were registered in business, health and social services. Jobs declined in government (-13,000) with the majority of the cuts occurring in local schools. Construction jobs remained at about the same level. A breakdown of seasonally unadjusted August workforce estimates for Michigan and its 10 major labor markets follows, along with a listing of county jobless rates.
