Alpine Township Beats Alabama for Behr Industries Expansion Project

528 New Jobs for StateBehr Industries Corporation has selected Alpine Township over a site in Alabama, to expand its manufacturing capability, Governor John Engler announced today. The project will create 528 new jobs, 341 directly by the company, for Michigan workers."Once again, Michigan proves it can compete with its state rivals for quality jobs," Governor Engler said. "The Behr Industries expansion project will benefit West Michigan workers and the economy."Of the new jobs, 187 will be spin-off jobs created from spending by people who receive income from the jobs at Behr Industries Corporation, according to an economic analysis done by the University of Michigan.The Governor also announced the approval of a tax credit for Behr Industries Corporation, worth an estimated $2.3 million over eight years. The tax credit was approved by the Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA).This project will provide more than $12 million in revenue to the state over the life of the agreement, resulting in a net positive gain for the state of over $9.6 million after the MEGA credit. The project is expected to generate over $150 million in personal income.Behr Industries Corporation is a manufacturer of high quality wood interior trim components to automotive companies and suppliers. The project includes bringing in new equipment and employees to increase manufacturing capability at its facility in Alpine Township. "We have always felt Michigan was the place to be because of the close proximity of our customer base and the availability of high quality skilled labor," said President Dr. Matthias Berg, Behr Industries Corporation. "The MEGA grant will allow us to better serve our customers and provide more economic growth for our local community. We appreciate everything the State of Michigan has done to make this possible." The Michigan Economic Growth Authority program, which is administered by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is used to promote high quality economic growth and job creation in Michigan that would not occur without this program.
