Accumulated Total of More Than $1.3 Million Awards Granted This Year
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced today that 814 Michigan workers will have the opportunity to improve their job skills through $352,189 in Economic Development Job Training grants.The grants will be used to upgrade the skills of workers at nine Michigan companies.
“Companies are attracted to Michigan because of our strong workforce and nationally known business friendly environment,” said Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.“Economic Development Job Training grants help ensure that Michigan employers have the highly trained technical workers needed for successful operations.”
The program helps Michigan businesses create new jobs or retain existing jobs by improving the skills and competitiveness of Michigan’s workforce.Under the requirements of the job-training program, employers must provide a 25 percent match for training existing workers.For these grants, employers will provide $96,891 in matching funds.
The funds are provided to local community colleges, vocational-technical schools or other training providers chosen by the employer.As the state’s 18 Michigan Technical Education Centers (M-TECs)SM open for business, more companies are expected to utilize their training services, which are tailored to each company’s skill needs and time demands.There are 17 M-TECsSMcurrently open with one more scheduled to open next year.Since their inception, Michigan M-TECs have provided service to more than 1,000 employers and 33,800 trainees, totaling over 589,800 training hours.
