The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced today that 5,067 Michigan workers will have the opportunity to improve their job skills through nearly $3 million in grants.Twenty grants, funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Economic Development Job Training program, will be used to upgrade the skills of workers at 20 Michigan companies.

“These grants will help provide Michigan workers with the learning tools and resources needed to improve and enhance their job skills,” said Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.“Michigan takes pride in its reputation of possessing a strong workforce.Providing job training programs allows us to continue to develop this workforce while addressing the specific training needs of each company.”

The program helps Michigan businesses create new jobs or retain existing jobs by improving the skills and competitiveness of Michigan’s workforce.Under the requirements of the job training program, employers must provide a 25 percent match for training existing workers. For these 20 grants employers will provide $912,652 in matching funds.

The funds are provided to local community colleges, vocational-technical schools or other training providers. As the state’s 18 Michigan Technical Education Centers (M-TECs)sm open for business, more companies are expected to utilize their training services, which are tailored to each company’s skill needs and time demands. There are seven M-TECssm currently open with more scheduled to open this year.
