Accumulated Total of More Than $20.7 Million Awards Granted This Year
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced today that 1,077 Michigan workers will have the opportunity to improve their job skills through $611,348 in Economic Development Job Training grants.Eight grants provided to local educational facilities will be used to upgrade the skills of workers at Michigan companies throughout the state.
“The MEDC is committed to assisting employers with job training programs specific to their organizational needs,” said Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.“The EDJT program provides employees with training on the newest processes and technology.As a result, employees also gain a competitive edge in the workforce.”
The program helps Michigan businesses create new jobs or retain existing jobs by improving the skills and competitiveness of Michigan’s workforce.Under the requirements of the job-training program, employers must provide at least a 25 percent match for training existing workers.For these grants, employers will provide $179,883 in matching funds.
The funds are provided to local community colleges, vocational-technical schools or other training providers chosen by the employer.As the state’s 18 Michigan Technical Education Centers (M-TEC)SM open for business, more companies are expected to utilize their training services, which are tailored to each company’s skill needs and time demands.There are 15 M-TECsSM currently open with more scheduled to open this year.
