Detroit-based technology and fashion entrepreneur Lori McColl shares her “bottom line” advice for budding entrepreneurs looking to expand and grow their businesses in Michigan.

Lori McColl had over a decade of experience in the creative data technology sector when she founded WHIM in 2016. WHIM helps companies optimize their websites through data analytics, web design and cloud-based solutions. Lori is also co-founder of the annual Detroit Fashion + Tech Hackathon which, with support from the Michigan Economic Development Company, aims to connect fashion brands around the world with technology-savvy professionals and mentors.

In this edition of Three Takeaways, Lori shares three takeaways for entrepreneurs looking to launch and grow their businesses.

  1. Start taking steps forward. If you have a passion for or a curiosity about something, start exploring it. It’s okay to keep your current job while you see how your project develops.
  2. Live up to the challenging moments. There will be challenging moments throughout your entrepreneurial journey, and it’s in those moments that you will determine whether you can stick it out.
  3. Give it a shot. Take a look at the resources that are available to you within the city, county and state. The MEDC has many resources for entrepreneurs looking to turn their passion into a business.
