Chairman Emeritus, Stryker Corporation, Portage
John W. Brown is chairman emeritus of Stryker Corporation. He became president and chief executive officer of the company in 1977, and retired as CEO in 2004. After 27 years at its helm, he left behind a powerhouse medical device company. During his tenure he transformed the organization into a top-performing provider of artificial joints, implants, and surgical instruments. He served as chairman of the board from 1980 through 2009.
Brown was appointed to the MEDC Executive Committee in 2001.
Brown started his career as an engineer for the Ormet Corporation, an aluminum manufacturer, and then worked on rocket propellants for the Thiokol Corporation before joining Squibb Corporation and subsequently becoming president of Edward Weck & Company, a subsidiary of Squibb.
Education and Personal
A native of Tennessee, Brown is a graduate of Auburn University with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering.
Brown is a director of the American Business Conference, a coalition of Chief Executive Officers of mid-size, high-growth companies; and InHealth: The Institute for Health Technology Studies in Washington, D.C. He also is a director of St. Jude Medical, a global cardiovascular device company, and Gen-Probe, a world leader in Nucleic Acid Diagnostics for human disease.
He is married to Rosemary Kopel Brown and they have two daughters and four grandchildren.
